From Rene Cayeux’s catalog for 1939: “S. bishop’s violet. F. wide, velvety black purple, very large. Height 3 ft.
From Cooley’s 1944 catalog: “A but little known French iris of velvety blackish hue, one of the best we have ever grown. When the war ended importation of irises from France, but little stock of this one had been brought into the country and it is thus seldom seen in gardens. The blooms are huge, almost black, with a beautiful sheen and very broad falls. Our stock is limited.”
CM SNHF 1938, AM AIS 1940.
Note: Per the expert, the clump shot is closer to the real color than the individual bloom shot.
