From Cornell Extension Bulletin 112, 1925: “Vilmorin, 1904. Color effect a a red-purple self. S. Mathews’ purple, reticulated darker on the lighter claw. F. violet-purple, becoming bluer as it fades. Fine, sparse, inconspicuous beard.
The flower is of good form and excellent fragrance. Some persons consider the odor to be that of delicious grape juice. While this is one of the older varieties, it is still distinct, and its free blooms and color are worthy of a place in any garden. Rating 75.”
From Robert Wayman’s catalog of 1932: “28 inches. Early. A recent French introduction and a very fine flower of brilliant violet coloring.”
