Captain Gallant

Schmelzer, R. 1957 / I. 1959

TB 36″ E-L

From Fleur de Lis Gardens catalog for 1960: “A complete self in rich deep red with no purple influence at all and with no haft markings or any other color to detract as even the beard blends perfectly. The flowers are very large, of semi-flaring form, non-burning and very heavily substanced.”

From Cooley’s Gardens catalog for 1963: “This brand new red has probably more advanced fanfare than any other in its color class. Several breeders of today’s finest reds have told us, after seeing it, that it is probably the finest red to date. The introducer calls it ‘the red Iris that is red throughout, with no purple marks and no haft markings.’ Huge in size and holds its color in heat or wind.
