TB 35″ M

From Schreiner’s Iris Lover’s catalog for 1964: “Here is a ruby to garnet red of different tonal value from any red we have previously introduced. It is emphatically not a dull red but rich and jewel-like. The crisply flaring blooms have ideal classic form, remarkable substance, and a plushy sheen on the falls. Haft markings are totally absent.”

(Caldron X sdlg. N595-1), HM 1964, JC 1964 & 1965, AM 1966, Cook-Lapham 1966.

Note: This is one of several examples of iris varieties whose former catalog descriptions describe ‘clean hafts’ yet the bloom clearly does have some haft veining. Are the descriptions exaggerated? Are the irises mis-named? And how to find out?

Provenance: Picture from L Munro’s garden Newfoundland NJ, 2005; Obtained from Greenvalley Iris 2003.
