First Société d’National Horticulture de France W. R. Dykes Memorial Medal Winner 1928.
From Cayeux et LeClerc catalog for 1930: “For a long time, a self pure golden yellow Iris of good growth, tall habit and flowers of good size has been the aim of most raisers. If we consider ‘Gold Imperial’ or ‘Amber’ to mention few only of recent pure yellow productions; the habit of the plants and the size of the flowers leave much to desire. As for ‘Shekinah’ if its growing qualities are satisfying, its colour is weak passing away to light sulphur-yellow when fully open. Pluie d’Or is the first large flowered Iris pure deep yellow of actual value put into commerce. The many branched strong stems over 3 feet tall bearing neat pure yellow flowers in great numbers. This outstanding matchless production, has raised, this spring, most enthusiastic admiration from all our visitors.”
From Quality Gardens catalog for 1930: “Translation: Golden Rain. This is a self color, a pure golden yellow. The many and widely branched firm strong stems bear very large flowers of great substance. M. Cayeux told me in the spring of 1928 that he looked forward to it as the world’s best yellow. In 1928 it received a Certificate of Merit… and the W.R. Dykes Medal. This was the first time that the Dykes Medal was ever awarded in France.”
From Cooley’s Gardens catalog for 1932: “A beautiful iris, on slender, perfectly branched stalks well over three feet tall. Fine rounded flowers of solid golden yellow, with deep yellow beard. Winner of the Dykes medal in France, it has proven an outstanding variety of this color both in Europe and America. Wherever I went last spring I found hybridizers at work with crosses from this variety, an indication of the regard in which it is held by our foremost introducers.”
1st French Dykes Medal 1928, CM SNHF 1928, AM-Haarlem 1931, AM RHS 1938.
Note: The French award system from the 1920’s-30’s awarded the ‘Special Prize’ to the ‘three best new Irises’. Beginning in 1928, the W. R. Dykes Memorial Medal was awarded to the best of those three, the finest new iris of the year.
