IB, Early bloom and rebloom. Color Class-B1D. Hill 1932.
From Robert Wayman: Rare Iris and Peonies 1939. 18:, The unusual brilliant ultramarine blue color of this iris would make it valuable even if it flowered only in the spring, but it is a profuse bloomer, twice a year.A real gem and one of the best of the fall bloomers.”
This iris is described as a bright blue bitone of heavy substance that increases heavily.
Provenance: Image 1 photographed in 2015 in the garden of L Munro,Newfoundland NJ; rhizome acquired from Argyle Acres circa 2007.
Note the difference between the catalog depiction and what is growing today. Note this is not a catalog photograph but a drawing, aka depiction of some sort. In Wayman’s 1940 catalog he states that the illustration did not come out quite right,as there is more violet tone to it and the falls are much darker than shown. “We plan to have another set of color plates made during the coming flowering season.”
